Sonder Shuts Down — And Triggers Guest Chaos
Marriott Accuses Sonder of Using Guest Safety as Leverage
As Sonder spiraled toward Chapter 7 liquidation, Marriott says the apartment-hotel operator tried to pressure the hospitality giant for emergency funding—allegedly threatening to shut down systems and lock guests out. Marriott terminated its licensing deal just before Sonder’s Nov. 15 bankruptcy filing, citing guest safety as its priority. Guests were given almost no notice to vacate, refunds were delayed or reversed, and Marriott now seeks legal clearance to rebook displaced travelers without violating bankruptcy laws.
Thousands of travelers were left in limbo after Sonder’s shutdown. Guests arriving at once-leased hotels found locked doors, eviction notices, and no staff—often with no warning. Marriott, contrary to early assumptions, was not the operator of the affected properties. Future refunds may be unlikely, but here are some resources that could potentially help in getting it.
SilverDoor is strengthening its corporate housing supply by partnering with IHG Hotels & Resorts, bringing over 750 extended-stay hotels—including Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites, Atwell Suites, and more—onto its booking platform. This move improves booking consistency for business travelers, especially for stays under 30 nights, and offers live rates and availability. IHG sees the collaboration as a win for hotel owners and guests alike.
